Dr Michael Mikhail
Dr. Michael Mikhail is an Egyptian-British Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon with a distinguished career spanning over 20 years across Europe and Africa. He currently serves at Kabgayi Eye Unit in Rwanda and is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Rwanda. Passionate about advancing medical education and eye care in Africa, Dr. Mikhail co-founded a state-of-the-art Simulation and Learning Center at Kabgayi—an innovative facility empowering the next generation of local ophthalmologists through hands-on surgical training.
As Vice President for Northern Africa at the African Ophthalmology Council, he plays a strategic leadership role in strengthening ophthalmic care across the continent. Dr. Mikhail is also actively working to establish a formal Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship in collaboration with the University of Rwanda, aiming to build sustainable capacity in complex retinal care.
He is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (London) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, with prior consultant roles in several NHS trusts in the United Kingdom. His key areas of interest include vitreoretinal surgery, simulation-based surgical education, and strengthening locally driven ophthalmic training programs in resource-limited settings.
